Though not part of the plan but part of the vision we see the possible redevelopment of Cedar Point Beach for use by the public. We want to stress our economy is in dire need of diversification away from tourist industries but we see the economy heading in a downward trend and the suggestion of the development of Cedar point Beach in conjunction with of course Cedar Point would be a way to stabilize and maintain tourist dollars through an economy rate tourist attraction.
Cedar Point Beach started it all and put Sandusky on the map but most of this beautiful beach now goes unused and has a large potential to draw thousands more people to Sandusky to spend those tourist dollars. If an agreement can be reached with Cedar fair to let the city lease a portion of the beach Cedar fair could benefit by offering services on this public park such as maybe; a restaurant, a tiki bar, and a mini midway. This way they may capture revenue from those that couldn’t afford the whole fare of the park or even those families that would of only stayed at Cedar Point Hotel for just weekend may now spend a couple days at the park and a three days at the beach.
If Cedar Fair would reopen Cedar Point Beach to the public in exchange for lower property taxes or reduced admission taxes then downtown Sandusky could market itself to a high speed ferry hovercraft service. The ferry could leave from a downtown dock and land right on cedar point beach. Thousands of beachgoers could then use the additional parking at our newly rehabilitated parks and a system of shuttles connecting the parks and the ferry dock. Cedar Point would still have a large private section of beach for their resort guest. The new Geothermal cooperative could build a bathhouse and restroom facilities on the beach as well as pay to have lifeguards and security on the beach. The city could see additional revenue in the form of a ferry tax. Using hovercraft ferries could be advantageous as during the winter when the lake is frozen over the hovercraft ferries could service the islands and their taverns, pubs, restaurants, and hotels thereby boosting both economies in the wintertime. These ferries could also be utilized for the notorious wayward ice fisherman rescues as well.
The opening of Cedar Point Beach to the public and its access only being by boat or ferry could potentially drive new development in the downtown and attract nationally known restaurants and hotel chains.
Charging a fee for a “for-profit” ferry service also helps to keep an undesirable element such as thieves away from the beach. It would also be an alternate way to enter Cedar Point Park for those wanting to avoid large traffic jams and parking hassles.
If the city establishes a large BioGas production plant a long term contract to a ferry service maybe a viable option and we would have the novelty of having BioGas powered ferries.
The opening of Cedar Point beach would give the public back a large amount of property.
All of this could attract new businesses to town that actually create new wealth that will help insulate our economy from any economic downturn
